ASL FAQs

You may be asking, why should I learn ASL?

Will it really help me in my classroom?  The simple answer is, YES!

It is the most versatile strategy we have ever used. Using American Sign Language (ASL) in an early childhood classroom supports adult-child bonding by creating brain-based early experiences that provide nurturing and positive connections. It is an effective communication strategy with all children, including English language learners and exceptional children! But wait, there is MORE! It is a gift from the deaf community that supports hearing children's language, social-emotional, and even fine motor skills.

Enroll in our self-paced eLearning course to learn how and why ASL is used in early childhood.

Will I have access to my instructor? This course has been designed as a self-paced course with an online community of practice. What does that mean? It means you can engage in the content when it is convenient. The course material has been designed into 3 courses, which include 4 lessons. Each lesson consists of a video and course reading, which will take approximately 10 min. for each component.  In our online community of practice, you can engage with other early childhood professionals to ask questions, share ideas, and ask for advice. This is also where you will engage with the instructor.

A community of practice is a beautiful way to support a collaborative learning environment with educators and professionals. It is a group of people engaging in reflective practice around a particular topic or strategy, in this case, using American Sign Language (ASL) in the classroom. In a community of practice, teachers learn collaboratively by reflecting on what worked well and what was challenging and then co-creating solutions to support teacher and student learning.

You will need a good internet connection, a computer or tablet, and your favorite way to take notes. Last, you will need a growth mindset and a willingness to try something new and persevere through the learning curve.
